An Authentic Sports Bar Experience: Mulligan’s in Quito
If you’re looking for a bit of Americana in Quito, look no further than Mulligan’s Pub & Grill. Owner Mario Adler beautifully recreates the atmosphere of an American sports bar, from the 11 high-definition TVs, Internet feeds of NCAA football games on Saturdays and the Sunday NFL ticket on DirectTV, down to the sports memorabilia, Betty Boop posters and foosball and pool tables. Excellent burgers and steaks are the signature dishes here, and don’t forget to try the Green beer.
hen traveling abroad, some Americans get a little homesick. They miss the many comforts of home, including their local watering hole.
The further one travels outside the U.S. the harder it is to find those essential creature comforts. But one place in Ecuador lays claim to a much sought-after bit of Americana, the sports bar. And it is here in Quito that a true sports fan can find the best – perhaps only – authentic American sports bar in Ecuador: Mulligan’s Pub & Grill.
Mulligan’s is something of a cross between an Irish pub and an American sports bar. Mulligan’s has that great Irish name; it broadcasts Notre Dame games on Saturday; and it serves a dark, Irish micro-brewed stout beer. (The stout, along with their Abbey Ale called Belgium Triple, is actually made by Americans in the coastal town of Canoa).
Mulligan’s also has something that even the local Irish pubs don’t have: Green beer. Come in on Friday night and get warmed up for your sports weekend with a “Buy 1, Get 3” happy-hour special from 4-8pm. That’s a deal even the Irish would love!
Then, come back on the weekend to enjoy the your favorite team’s game. And if you have to bring the kids, Mulligan’s understands. Children eat free Saturday and Sunday.
Like traditional American sports bars, Mulligan’s is decked out with all manner of sports and pop culture paraphernalia. Jerseys, concert posters and neon beer signs fill in the gaps around the televisions as Betty Boop keeps watch over the pool table (which is also near the foosball table, the dart board, and table games).
If you need a WIFI connection, you can get that along with your meal.
Meat-eaters rejoice: Mulligan’s food is for the sports fan with a hearty appetite. Favorites include the Jack Daniel’s Pepper steak (tenderloin covered in an original pepper sauce and cooked in the finest Tennessee whisky) and the classic Philly cheese steak sandwich. And then there’s the Mulligan’s Burger, a 16-oz. behemoth with two half-pound patties stacked between three buns, cheese, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and onions.
This year there are three new menu items: The Southwest Steak (grilled filet with house spices and condiments), the Border Chicken (grilled chicken breast on a bed of nachos with Buffalo sauce, ham, cheese, guacamole, and tomato), and the Nachos with chicken featuring an zesty dip of cream cheese, beans, pico de gallo, salsa, cheddar cheese, and guacamole.
In recognition that sporting events happen somewhere every day, Mulligan’s maintains several attractive offers for all: “2 for 1 cocktails,” and “Buy 3, Get 4 Miller beers” seven days a week.
Home is where the heart is. And at Mulligan’s, it’s like you never left home.
